As the Assistant Director for the Office of Engineering Studies at Chicago State University, I oversee many after school programs for elementary and high school students including the Pre-Freshman Program and Engineering and Science. Our 6th, 7th, and 8th graders compete in numerous local, regional, and national competitions where we have placed.
To help the students prepare for the competition, I chose Leslie McKinney as our mentor for her electrical engineering, program management. For CSIC, the students and I decided to enter the competition with a new idea we have never done for any of the other competitions. As Leslie would say, “you are the creative, and I am here to support you with my knowledge of technology and project management.” And that she did.
With her guidance and as part of the research, Leslie introduced the students to electrical engineering principles such as data sheets for the students to understand how the circuitry operates. Because of her involvement, our team won 2nd place in the Computer Science Award.
Sincerely,
Marnie Boyd, Assistant Director Engineering Studies
